On this day, 20 April 1914, the Ludlow massacre took place when US troops opened fire with machine guns on a camp of striking miners and their families in Ludlow, Colorado.
On this day, 20 April 1919, 1,000 youths confronted soldiers in one of the major flashpoints of the Limerick Soviet in Ireland. The Limerick Trades and Labour Council had become a strike committee, and it was effectively running the city during a general strike against the imposition of an onerous pass system by the British military.
On this day, 19 April 1960, the April revolution began in earnest when thousands of students marched against the US-backed dictatorship from Korea University in Seoul, the day after other protesting students were attacked by government supporters. Police opened fire on the crowd, massacring 180, and the government declared martial law. However the movement grew, and the following week the army refused to fire on protesters.
On this day, 19 April 1943, the Warsaw ghetto uprising broke out in earnest when Jewish people fought back against Nazi attempts to deport them to the Treblinka extermination camp.
