On this day, 18 August 1823, the Demerara rebellion (in modern-day Guyana) saw over 10,000 enslaved African people in the British colony go from plantation to plantation stealing weapons, locking up their enslavers and putting them in stocks.
On this day, 18 August 1945, the Japanese Ministry of the Interior ordered police to be setting up "sexual comfort stations" (i.e., brothels) for US occupation troops, just before the start of surrender talks (content note: sexual violence).
This date, 18 August in 1936, is the most likely date in which the gay socialist poet Federico García Lorca was taken from his jail cell and executed on the order of right-wing general Francisco Franco's military forces. The exact circumstances of his death are unclear, but after being arrested on August 16 he was probably killed on August 18 in the early hours of the morning.
